When football data is empty, a journalist must be brave enough to say no

There is a football analysis report that crossed my desk recently. It was dozens of pages long, yet it contained no actual conclusion. No team name, no player name, no score, no transfer fee. Every major category, from tactics and finance to the dressing room, was left empty. For a newsroom chasing headlines, it looked like a disaster. For me, a data journalist who has covered football for more than twenty years, it looked like a professional manifesto. The warning at the top was clear: the stage-one analysis was empty and incomplete. No headline, no source, no core viewpoint, no information points. No player, team, or deal could be identified. So every part of the analysis had to stop. Without a factual foundation, no tactical or financial judgment is possible. The only honest option was to say so. An empty analysis is not meaningless. It protects readers from invented conclusions. Among all the transfer rumors and hot takes, a report that refuses to guess is rare. I learned long ago that a false number is more dangerous than an empty cell. My first expected-goals table was written by hand on a bus, back when nobody called it data. Today, I still believe the same thing: if the data is not there, a football writer should have the courage to say nothing.
